According to the latest annual job creation numbers published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 33.55 million jobs were created in 2022. This is calculated by aggregating the total number of gross job gains recorded per quarter. 2022’s figure marks a 4.09% annual fall, and the first decline in three years.
The data analyzing the number of jobs created by year shows that this figure has fluctuated over the past decade. In 2013, 28.41 million new jobs were created—a 1.01% rise from the previous year.

Growth continued in 2014 and at a faster rate, as the number of jobs created rose by 3.05%, to 29.27 million. In 2015, this figure grew by 1.76%, to 29.79 million, before falling marginally by 0.19% in 2016, to 29.73 million. The economy added 437,000 million jobs in 2017, a 1.47% annual rise, and a 0.76% growth in 2018 took the number of jobs past the 30 million mark, to 30.39 million . A fractional 0.16% decline followed in 2019, as the number fell to 30.35 million.
Statistics on annual job creation show growth returned in the two following years and at an accelerated rate, as the market recorded increases of 6.85% and 7.88% in 2020 and 2021, respectively. This brought the number of jobs created to 32.43 million in 2020 and 34.98 million in 2021.
Job creation by year: 2022 quarterly breakdown
A breakdown of the number of jobs created per quarter in 2022 shows that 8.44 million positions were created in the first quarter of the year. This was a 1.39% annual increase but a 11.92% plunge from the previous quarter.
This figure fell to 8.25 million in Q2, a 2.19% dip, before a 6.8% rise brought it back up to 8.81 million. In the final quarter of the year, 8.04 million jobs were created.
