Shopify currently has the largest ecommerce platform market share in the USA, with nearly one in three (28%) online businesses using it to power their stores. In second place is Wix Stores, with 18%, followed by WooCommerce Checkout, with 17%.
As the three largest ecommerce platforms, Shopify, WooCommerce Checkout, and Wix Stores’ combined market shares in the USA make up 63%. In other words, nearly two out of every three online shops in the USA use one of these three leading ecommerce platforms to sell their merchandise.

Fourth on the list of the leading ecommerce platforms in the USA is Squarespace’s Add to Cart, which has 14% of the total market share. This is followed by Ecwid, with 4% of the ecommerce platform market share in the USA.

As of November 2023, there are around 2.9 million online stores in the USA that use Shopify as their ecommerce platform. From culinary and fitness to comics and fashion, the range of niches they’re in is wide and varied.
The majority of these stores are located in California. Some 90,500 businesses there use Shopify as their preferred ecommerce platform. This is followed by New York and Florida, home to approximately 39,100 and 35,500 Shopify customers, respectively.
A similar trend is seen with WooCommerce Checkout and Wix Stores. Each powers around 1.8 million online stores in the USA. These businesses also span across a huge range of industries including sports, health, foodstuffs, and automotive.
Like Shopify, most of the businesses running on Wix Stores are located in California, Texas, and Florida, with 85,000, 38,200, and 35,100 online businesses running on Wix Stores in those states, respectively. Meanwhile, the states with the biggest number of stores using WooCommerce Checkout are California, New York, and Florida. Incidentally, these above-named states are also among the top 10 states with the largest number of small businesses.
